A Rare Mid-Air Encounter Captured in the Galápagos

April 20, 2026

A striking and unexpected moment from the Galápagos Islands has been revealed through the lens of Mattias Klum – featured by National Geographic.

While on expedition with the Charles Darwin Foundation, Klum witnessed something he had never encountered before. A juvenile red-footed booby flew past him carrying what appeared to be an unusual object. As he tracked it through his camera, it became clear the bird was grappling with an eel-like sea creature mid-air.

Moments later, the bird dropped its catch, creating a brief, almost surreal scene where both seemed to float separately in the open sky. “It was a fleeting, fragile encounter I could never have imagined,” Klum reflects.

Beyond its visual impact, the image also highlights a deeper truth: seabirds act as sentinels of a changing ocean, revealing shifts in temperature, currents, and the fragile balance of marine ecosystems under pressure.

Even after decades in the field, Klum notes that nature continues to offer moments that defy expectation—reminding us that the wild still holds countless untold stories.
