New Interview: Why Resilient Coral Reefs Still Give Reason for Hope

December 15, 2025

In a new feature from Swedish National Radio, Mattias Klum shares insights from decades of documenting coral reefs across the globe — and why he still finds reasons to remain hopeful.

As ocean heatwaves intensify due to climate change, coral bleaching events have become more widespread and severe. Yet, Klum emphasizes the importance of highlighting reefs that continue to show resilience. These so-called “super reefs” or “refugia reefs” – often located in colder current zones – may hold the key to future reef recovery.

“There is a lot of sorrow and despair in this line of work, but hope is found in these resilient ecosystems,” says Klum in the program.

The segment also features voices from leading scientists including Magnus Nyström from the Stockholm Resilience Centre and David Wachenfeld from the Australian Institute of Marine Science. Together, they explore what can still be done to protect and support these vital underwater habitats.
