Two new features from Swedish Radio, aired on December 10, 2025, shine a spotlight on the urgent state of the world’s coral reefs — and the work of Mattias Klum.
In the science program Klotet, Klum appears alongside leading marine researchers to discuss the alarming spread of coral bleaching caused by rising ocean temperatures. Despite the dire outlook, the episode, titled “Coral Reefs Are Bleaching – But Some Are Fighting Back”, explores the existence of so-called “source reefs” that remain resilient and can help restore damaged ecosystems. Klum contributes reflections from his extensive documentation of reefs around the world.
Complementing the broadcast is a short feature in Vetenskapsradion Nyheter titled “He Photographs Coral Reefs Around the World – This Gives Him Hope”. In the segment, Klum shares why, despite witnessing mass coral death, he remains hopeful: “Hope lies in seeing the resilience some reefs still have,” he says. “It’s easier to feel that connection and responsibility when you’ve seen it up close.”
The coverage highlights not only the threats facing marine ecosystems but also the power of storytelling, photography, and science working together to inspire action and awareness.
